India’s top online college to open in New Delhi
The top Indian online education company has announced a new campus in New Dehli, a major Indian city, as it seeks to boost its online education offerings.
The company, India-based Edia, announced on Thursday that it would open a new college in the northern Indian city of New Dehdli, where it is currently located.
The college will be in the city’s prestigious Aligarh district, a strategic hub of India’s IT sector.
It will have 100 students enrolled in undergraduate courses, and another 150 students enrolled as part of advanced programmes.
“The students will be drawn from the university’s undergraduate programmes.
Our focus is to bring our students up to the level of experts in the field of online education,” Edia CEO Kunal Narayan told AFP.
The announcement comes just a week after Edia’s parent company, the Nasscom, acquired the leading online education services provider, Coursera, in an $8 billion deal.
The deal was also seen as a sign of consolidation in the global online education industry.
The edia campus will be the first of its kind in India.
The school will be part of Edia Group, a conglomerate with investments in the likes of Snapdeal, Ola, Flipkart, Snapr, and Vimeo.
The group plans to invest in more than 10 campuses across India and plans to expand into other markets by 2022, the company said.
“We have been making investments in online education since the beginning.
We are also in talks with some other global companies to invest,” Narayan said.
Edia has more than 200,000 students enrolled online across its portfolio, including more than 30,000 in India, and plans more than 1,000 courses for undergraduates.
In January, the Indian government said it was setting up an expert advisory committee to examine online education in the country.
