What is a ‘school certificate’?
In what is being described as the biggest school certificate ever created, students from across the globe will take the online-only course in online education from the University of Toronto.
The University of Ontario’s College of Education has developed a certificate, with more than 30,000 students taking part in the test-taking programme.
Students from the United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom are among the countries taking part.
The university has created a test-taker, who will have to complete an online-based online course.
This is the first ever course to be accredited by the Higher Learning Accreditation Council (HLCA), the body that oversees the HLCA certification programme for colleges, universities and employers.
Students will need to pass a two-hour test, with no exam or written exams taking place.
The test is also based on a test taken in 2016, with some students taking the test at the beginning of 2017, with others taking it at the end of 2018.
The course is designed to be flexible, so it can be adapted to suit students’ individual needs, said the College of Educators’ head of learning, Dr Sarah MacLean.
“We’ve been working with the HLAC to ensure that the certification programme is flexible, which means that students can be ready to take this certificate in a few months, or a year,” she said.
“Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for people to take it, so that the students can start learning and grow as quickly as possible.”
This is the culmination of the work undertaken by Dr MacLean, who worked on a previous course in which the university developed a test for students who were not yet certified.
The new course is part of a global curriculum which will be taught at various levels across the world.
Students will learn about a range of subjects, including English, French, history, geography, maths, music, philosophy, psychology, linguistics, social sciences, mathematics and history.
“I am thrilled that the College is launching the College Certificate in Learning, an online course that will provide an alternative to traditional academic courses,” said Dr Maclean.
“The College is providing a pathway for our students to be able to take the College certificate in learning in the context of the traditional academic curriculum.
This will allow students to learn more about what is required of them in order to become successful learners in the modern world.”
The course will be open to students from countries that are not members of the HLA, such as countries that have not ratified the H2020 Framework.
The College of Teachers’ Association (CTA) is also looking to create a similar online course for its members.
The CTA is the body which oversees the education certification programme at the University.
“It is a fantastic initiative from the College and the CTA to be a part of the process, which I am delighted about,” said CTA President Dr John Phelan.
“While we are aware that this is not a typical online course, we look forward to working closely with the College to ensure the online course is a success,” he added.
