Roma v Genoa: ‘Theres no way back’
On a cold and rainy afternoon in Rome, Andrea Belotti and his teammates, the only ones still in the stands, are waiting for their turn to play in the last of the two-legged playoff ties between Roma and Genoa.
With only a few minutes remaining, a minute of the extra-time period will decide the winners of the Serie A and Serie B competitions, and they will have to play a game in Rome to make the semi-finals.
As Belotti watches from the stands the only words he hears are his name, and the final whistle.
For the players, the first leg of the tie is more than a game.
It is a second opportunity to make history, to show the Italian public what they’ve been missing out on all this time.
“We can’t imagine a better chance than this,” says Belotti.
Roma and Geno have been at the same stage for years, and since they first met in 2009 they have been in a league and cup battle for the past two seasons.
With the return of their two star players, Alessandro Florenzi and Fabio Cannavaro, as well as Andrea Barzagli, the team has a lot of confidence in them.
However, the atmosphere is very different.
Genoa’s fans have been waiting for this moment for some time.
On the pitch, they can see the team with their own eyes, the one that they love to hate.
But it has been a long time since they have faced the side from Turin.
There are some who think this was the first time they faced a Roma side, a side that had been relegated in 2010, a team that lost to a Sassuolo side in 2013, a club that have been struggling to win a trophy since the 2006/07 season.
They are disappointed that they were unable to get a result against the Nerazzurri.
On the pitch they see a team they love, one that was always their number one.
In Rome, the fans know that they are part of history.
They feel like a part of their team.
Their enthusiasm and passion are something that makes them unique and their victory over the Nerazio is something they will never forget.
